What causes it and how I prevent it from happening?? I tried to reinstall nexus but that didn't work either.

However, NMM is breathing on community support updates, while developers have abandoned it entirely. Everyone is working with Vortex and waiting for it come out, so this bug will unlikely remain unsolved. I also hit in to that issue once. I also made sure that there were no obsolete NMM versions in my hard drive.
